1. Introduction

Welcome to Novele. This Privacy Policy explains how Nōvele Inc. ("Nōvele", "we", "us", "our") collects, uses, maintains and protects the personal information of users of our mobile application and website.

Nōvele is a bilingual (French/English) reading app designed and developed in Quebec, Canada. As an institution headquartered in Quebec, we are subject to the Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector (c. P-39.1) and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, as well as all other laws that apply to our activities (collectively, the "Act").

If you do not consent to Nōvele's use and disclosure of your personal information in accordance with this Policy, please refrain from using Nōvele.

2. Personal Information Collected and Means of Collection

"Personal information" is any information that relates to a natural person and allows, directly or indirectly, that person to be identified. When you use our mobile application or website, we collect some of the following personal information:

2.1 Account Information

  • First and last name

  • Email address

  • Profile picture

  • Username (chosen by you)

  • Password (encrypted, never read in the clear)

  • Preferred language (English or French)

2.2 Read and log data

  • Books added to your library

  • Reading statuses (Read, In progress, To read, Abandoned / DNF)

  • Written notes (private diary and shared summaries)

  • Voice notes (audio recordings in your journal)

  • Ratings (ratings, spice index, emotions, tropes, trigger warnings)

  • Saved quotes and excerpts

  • Reading List (TBR) and Filters Used

  • Literary preferences

  • Your appreciation and review of books

2.3 Usage Data

  • Connection information (date, duration, frequency)

  • Features used

  • Application performance data (errors, crashes)

  • IP address and device type (collected automatically)

  • Users you follow and who follow you

2.4 Imported data

  • Library data imported from other reading applications (via CSV file voluntarily provided by the user)

We don't directly connect your account with another reading app. The import is done manually by the user via an uploaded file.

The majority of this personal information is collected directly from you. Some information is required for you to use Nōvele. Other information is optional, but the quality of your experience could be affected without it.

We may also collect certain personal information through our app download platforms if you have consented to it.

3. Use of Information

We use your personal information for the following purposes:

  • Create and manage your account

  • Providing and improving the functionality of the app

  • Generate personalized reading recommendations based on your feelings, habits and preferences

  • To send you service-related communications (updates, security alerts)

  • Analyze app usage to improve the experience

  • Respond to your support requests

  • Comply with our legal obligations

We never use your private diary or voice notes for any purpose other than the operation of your personal account, unless you have explicit consent.

4. Your rights

In accordance with the law, you have the following rights:

4.1 Right of access

You may request to see the personal information we hold about you. You may also submit a request for information regarding Nōvele's collection, use and disclosure of your personal information.

4.2 Right to rectification

You may request correction of any inaccurate, incomplete or ambiguous information.

4.3 Right to withdraw consent to disclosure or use

You may withdraw or change your consent to the use and disclosure of your personal information, or refuse to participate in certain uses and disclosures, subject to applicable legal and contractual restrictions.

To exercise any of these rights, contact our Privacy Officer listed below. We will respond to your request within 30 days. It is also possible to delete your account from the app's settings.

5. Sensitive information

Nōvele collects certain information that may be considered sensitive, including:

  • Your emotions and feelings related to your reading

  • Your personal voice notes

  • Your private reading journal

  • Trigger warnings that you associate with certain books (which can reveal information about your personal experience)

This information is treated with the highest level of protection. They are never shared with third parties for commercial purposes. Your private journal is inaccessible to any other user unless you explicitly choose to share it.

6. Information Sharing

The personal information you publish in public publications is visible to everyone, such as your username, the books in your newspaper, your reviews of public books, and the ratings you give to books.

Personal information that you post in publications that are identified as private, such as voice notes, private notes, narrative scores, and warnings about certain sensitivities, is visible only to you.

We never sell your personal information. We may share it in the following circumstances with the following parties:

6.1 Service Providers

We use third-party providers (hosting, analytics, notifications) that process data on our behalf, governed by legally compliant confidentiality agreements. Under contractual agreements with us, our third-party service providers are required to protect your personal information from unauthorized access, collection, use, or disclosure. In addition, our service providers are not authorized to disclose your information to others.

However, some of our third-party service providers may store or process your personal information in a country other than Canada. If required by law or court order, it may be available to judicial authorities in that country, including law enforcement agencies and authorities with national security jurisdiction.

We use third-party generative AI providers to rate the books on your profile and your ratings of them to generate reading recommendations. This feature cannot be disabled.

6.2 Legal obligations

We may disclose your information if required to do so by law, in connection with legal proceedings or at the request of a competent authority.

If we sell or transfer part of our business to someone else, in some cases we will share information with the new owner as part of that transaction, but only in accordance with the law.

7. Retention and Destruction

We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as necessary for the purposes described. After deleting your account:

  • Your account data is deleted within 30 days

  • Your voice notes and private journal are deleted immediately

  • Some aggregated and anonymised data may be retained for statistical purposes

In accordance with the law, we have established a policy for the retention and destruction of personal information available upon request.

8. Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your information, including:

  • Data encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest

  • Restricted access to personal information within our team

  • Secure authentication

  • Regular security audits

9. Children

Nōvele is not intended for children under the age of 14. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors under the age of 14. If you are under the age of 14 or a parent or guardian and believe that your child has provided us with information, please contact us so that we can delete it.

10. Cookies and similar technologies

Our mobile app does not use cookies in the traditional sense. Our website may use cookies that are essential for the service to function.

12. Changes to this Policy

We may change this policy at any time. The collection, use and disclosure of your personal information by us will be governed by the current version of this Policy.
